Meet Ella D. 戴月红

Born and raised in Beijing, Ella D.(戴月红) currently reside in the San Francisco Bay Area. Studied classical piano and Chinese literature since four years old and sang for years in an American church choir during college, Ella has developed a strong passion and appreciation towards world music. During her time living in Chicago, Ella fell in love with local jazz clubs and has been the biggest jazz fan and advocate ever since.

Currently studying vocal jazz while working as a full-time software engineer, Ella studied at California Jazz Conservatory and Jazz Camp West. The vivid multicultural San Francisco music scene has been the biggest music inspiration for Ella, in terms of learning jazz under different cultural context, and exploring her own freedom and style in jazz. Outside of being a frequent visitor of the SFJazz Monthly Community jam and local open jams and open mics, Ella sings alto and soprano at local classical ensembles to improve her singing skills.

Ella is a big fan of American soul music, Japanese jazz and classical Chinese literature. She enjoys exploring ways to bring free soulful spirits and raw emotions into classical American standard. Currently Ella is working on American, Chinese, Japanese, and Brazilian music standards and working on improving her language skills. Her favorite singers include Carmen Mcrae, Elis Regina,  Hibari Misora (美空云雀),Teresa Teng(邓丽君),Diane Schuur,Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Melody Gardot.

When Ella is not singing or coding, she write a jazz and bay area local music journalism blog "乐红爱爵士2号" on www.xiaohongshu.com, to promote jazz to Chinese audiences. Considering Covid has been a very big hit to local musicians and music venues over the last three years, Ella organizes jazz music meetup events, to educate and bring new audiences to visit San Francisco Bay area music venues. She also writes blog posts to promote local artists, non profit art organizations, music events and venues. She is an active advocate in fostering the collaboration and communication between Asian art community and American music communities in the SF  bay area.
